The „Trash Factor“: Why the City Must Take Action
With a population of about 50,000, Venice is a small city that is visited by up to 30 million people each year. The main problem is the enormous mountains of trash, which are generated primarily by day-trippers who often bring their own food. While hotel guests already contribute through the local tax, many day-trippers leave behind trash but don’t contribute a single cent toward its disposal. The entrance fees are the first attempt to have these visitors contribute to the cleanup costs as well.
Price Comparison: Venice Is Cheaper Than You Think
Compared to other attractions, the fee quickly seems reasonable:
- Neuschwanstein: Approx. 23.50 € (including fees).
- Zugspitze: €69.00 for a round-trip ticket.
- Oktoberfest in Munich: A liter of beer and a whole chicken already cost over €30.00.
- Budget Venice: An espresso in a café on St. Mark’s Square can be had for as little as €1.50—contrary to the reputation of being a „rip-off.“ A bottle of mineral water on St. Mark’s Square: 0.60 euros.
