Carnival in Venice

Sometimes—yes, sometimes—you get lucky. A tourist noticed me trying to take a picture of this writing on a building wall in Venice.

On the spur of the moment, she joined in and, of her own accord, made the appropriate gesture. Since she spoke English (American), I’ll probably never see her again. Still: „A heartfelt thank you.“

For ambitious photographers and models, the day starts very early. It kicks off at 6 a.m. The first photographers are already waiting impatiently for the models at that hour. And as soon as the first ones arrive, the whole crowd pounces on their „prey.“ Expect at least 20 photographers per masked performer. Twenty photographers also means 40 elbows—40 sharp elbows. So you’ve got to be able to take a thing or two if you want to take good—or even great—pictures. Pictured here is the “German” masked performer. Manu Miedl. Find out here how a mask photographer experiences a day at Carnival:

Tuesday is Burano Mask Day

Carnival in Burano

All the masked figures and photographers have known this for years: On Tuesdays, everyone gathers in Burano. The first masked figures arrive there as early as around 10 a.m. With every boat that arrives, more masked figures join the crowd.
When the weather is perfect for photos—blue skies—the vibrant colors of Burano’s houses really come into their own. Every mask-wearer and every photographer knows this. And depending on the weather, the appeal of taking a boat to Burano is either strong or weak. Find out everything about Burano Mask Tuesday here.

Every day at sunset on the monastery island of San Giorgio.
