Venice is connected to the mainland at Mestre by a straight bridge (Ponte della Libertà) that is approximately 4 km long and 1 meter high. The bridge carries a 4-lane highway and several parallel train tracks.
The train station building

The stairs in front of the train station building are a popular resting spot for „backpackers.“
The station plaza right on the Grand Canal

As you can see in the picture above, the train station is located right on the Grand Canal, Venice’s main waterway. You walk straight out of the station and have access to all the major water bus routes (vaporetti).

The Terminal Station

The station is what is known as a terminal station, meaning that trains essentially travel backward from Venice back to the mainland, or onward from there.

The train station is located on the northern outskirts of Venice. It's a 45-minute walk to the city center, to the St. Mark's Square.
