The Festa del Redentore is one of the most important and popular festivals in Venice, celebrated every year in July. The Festa del Redentore in Venice takes place every year on the third Sunday in July celebrated, with the preceding Saturday also being part of the festival. In 2027, the festival will reach its peak on July 17 (Saturday) and July 17 (Sunday).

Origin

The festival dates back to 1576, when Venice was struck by a devastating plague that claimed thousands of lives. To save the city, the Venetians vowed to build a church in honor of the Holy Redeemer (Redentore) once the plague had passed. After the plague subsided, the Chiesa del Redentore was built on the island of Giudecca, which remains the center of the festival to this day.

The Giudecca Bridge

A unique feature of the festival is the floating wooden bridge that is built across the Canale della Giudecca to connect the island of Giudecca with the rest of Venice.

This bridge is erected only during the Redentore Festival and allows people to walk to the Chiesa del Redentore to take part in the religious ceremonies.

Saturday is the most spectacular day, featuring fireworks and a parade across the Giudecca Bridge, while Sunday is more devoted to religious celebrations, with a procession and services at the Chiesa del Redentore.

It really is a great time to visit Venice if you want to experience the traditional atmosphere and the incredible fireworks!

The Religious Significance

The Feast of the Redentore still holds religious significance. On the Sunday following the Saturday of the festivities, a procession takes place in which Venetians make a pilgrimage to the Chiesa del Redentore on the island of Giudecca. A special Mass is celebrated in the church to give thanks for the end of the plague and for the protection of the city.

The Fireworks (Sabato del Redentore) The highlight of the Redentore Festival is the grand fireworks display, which takes place on Saturday evening to mark the climax of the festivities. The fireworks are launched from a platform on the Canale della Giudecca and light up the entire city. It is one of the most spectacular fireworks displays in Europe and attracts thousands of visitors.

Venetians and tourists gather along the Grand Canal or on boats to watch the fireworks. The sight is particularly impressive because the fireworks not only light up the sky but also bathe the magnificent historic buildings and the lagoon in a magical light.

Celebrations and Traditions

On both banks of the Giudecca Canal, residents are making thorough preparations to celebrate the festival, which takes place at night, with plenty of food and drink.

The celebrations begin as early as Saturday morning, when Venetians prepare their boats to gather for the fireworks and festivities. Many families and friends celebrate on their boats, enjoying traditional Venetian dishes such as grilled foods (often fish and meat) and drinking Prosecco or Spritz as they enjoy the day.

Food and drink play a major role, and it's a joyful occasion where people come together to relax in the sun and celebrate the Venetian zest for life.

The Feast of the Redentore is not only a religious celebration but also an expression of Venetian identity and community. It is a celebration of gratitude, but also a gathering of people who uphold and celebrate the traditions of their city.
