Burano: Getting There by Vaporetto

Venice Attractions: Burano

Burano is an island near Venice. You can only get to this island by boat. Usually by a Vaporetto from Venice.

Burano: The Leaning Church Tower

From a distance, the first things you notice are the slightly crooked church tower and the colorful little houses.

Burano: Colorful, colorful, colorful

Once you're close enough, you'll be able to see everything much more clearly and in greater detail.

Burano: A Marketing Genius

Whoever came up with the idea of painting the houses in as many bright colors as possible is a marketing genius. After all, how else can you get tourists who’ve already seen everything in Venice (old houses, narrow canals, fishing boats, etc.) to make a special trip to the neighboring island of Burano? It’s simple: by painting the houses in bright colors and coming up with a nice story to go with it.

A typical scene in Burano

A typical scene in Burano: small, colorful houses and a tranquil canal. In Burano, it seems as if time has stood still. No hustle and bustle, no mass tourism, and no commotion, unlike in central Venice. Many photographers (myself included) tend to add a bit more color to their photos during post-processing. That’s not necessary with the photos here from Burano.

Burano in the Morning

Taken very early in the morning. Since Burano doesn't have any hotels, it's before the first Vaporetto The one from Venice is still very, very quiet and tranquil.

Tourists in Burano

By lunchtime, there are already more tourists in Burano.

Typical Burano

Typical Burano: colorful houses, narrow canals, and a few bridges.

Eating and Drinking in Burano

At lunchtime, it’s a great idea to grab a snack or a meal right by the canal. Very peaceful. Very pleasant. Very romantic—and affordable, too.

The Tips

Lace has made Burano famous.

Burano: Live Demos

You'll find numerous shops as well as live demonstrations of lace-making.

The Vaporetto from Punta Sabbioni

The Vaporetto Line 14 runs from Venice via Punta Sabbioni and Tre Porti to Burano. It's a very scenic ride through the northern lagoon.
