Skip the line to buy water bus tickets

Venice is an island in a lagoon in the northern Adriatic Sea. All transportation of goods and people takes place by water. Here is the view from the church tower San Giorgio of Venice's world-famous skyline. The southern face of the Alps can be seen in the background.

Water Buses – Vaporetti

The water buses used by locals and tourists are called vaporetti (plural: vaporetti). Pictured here is a vaporetto on the Grand Canal. To the left of it is a private water taxi. A single ride on the vaporetto costs €9.50. A ride on the water taxi costs up to €100.

Suitable only for large channels

The water buses are so large and wide that they can only travel along the Grand Canal. Outside the city’s narrow canals, there is, of course, enough space in the lagoon, so the water buses can also go to Lido, take a trip to Murano and Burano.

The Motonavi (Motorboats)

The many day-trippers who take a day trip from the Adriatic Sea in the summer arrive on a larger boat, which is called a “motonavi.” Pictured here is Line 14 or 15.

Official Prices – No Processing Fees!

A one-way trip costs €9.50 per person per trip. The trip may NOT exceed 75 minutes. One piece of luggage is included in the price.

If you're staying in Venice for a while, a multi-day ticket is worth it.
A 24-hour ticket costs 25.00 euros
A 2-day ticket costs €35.00
A 3-day ticket costs €45.00
A 7-day ticket costs €65.00

The 24-hour ticket is valid on the Italian railway system, Trenitalia (but only within the city limits of Venice). The following applies to all multi-day tickets: validity begins when the ticket is validated for the first trip.

Buying Tickets

There are ticket booths throughout the city, such as here at St. Mark's Square. Staffed ticket booths are located especially at the places where tourists arrive in Venice: at the airport, parking garages, and the train station.

Validate before every trip

Whether you have a single-ride ticket or a multi-day ticket, you must validate it before each ride. Simply hold your ticket up to the reader as shown in the picture here; it will confirm validity with a beep and display the date until which your multi-day ticket is valid.

Line 1

An absolute must for all tourists: a ride on Line 1 through the Grand Canal. Our tip: Read our free Travel Guide who will explain the most important palazzi along the Grand Canal to you.

Line 2: for a faster trip to or from the destination

The boats on Line 2 are identical to those on Line 1. Both lines also travel along the Grand Canal. Unlike Line 1, Line 2 stops only at the larger stops, making it a good option for a quicker trip to or from the city.

Lines 4.1 and 4.2 to Murano

These black-and-white boats are slightly smaller than the water buses on Lines 1 and 2. They are used for the trip to Murano.

Reserved Seats

On all water buses, you'll find several seats reserved for the elderly, people with disabilities, and pregnant women right after you board.

Not valid

The tickets for the water buses are NOT valid at the Gondola, the water taxis, the boats of the Alilaguna and for private boats.

The ACTV Ticket

The ACTV Ticket is the size of a debit card. With the online ticket voucher, you do NOT have to wait in line at the venue. Simply enter the online ticket code at a ticket machine, and you’ll receive your ticket immediately. Please note: the ACTV Ticket It must be validated before every ride. To do so, simply hold it up to the reader at the entrance to the bus stops.

The validity period of the tickets

  • For the duration of the ticket, it doesn't matter when you order your ticket online.
  • For the purposes of the ticket's validity period, it doesn't matter when you receive your ticket online.
  • For the ticket's validity period, it doesn't matter when you pick up your ticket from the ticket machine.
  • The only factor that determines the ticket's validity period is when you use the ticket for the first time in Venice:
  • Example:
  • If you use a 24-hour ticket for the first time at 10:00 a.m., it is valid continuously until 9:59 a.m. the next day. This means your last trip must end by 9:59 a.m.
  • The same applies to multi-day tickets; the only difference is that they are valid for a longer period.

You can purchase all ACTV tickets online at this link.
You pay NO processing fees. You pay the same price as you would in person.

Skip-the-Line Vaporetto (ACTV) Ticket

I'm sure you've heard this many times before:
Every year, millions of tourists want to visit Venice.

You never know just how tense the situation is on the ground until you're here yourself.

How many visitors are in town right now?
How long are the lines?

Fact: The high season runs from March through mid-November.

Fact: In the summer, thousands more day-trippers from the Adriatic Sea come to visit.

Fact: Not all counters are staffed in the winter, so there may still be wait times even here.

Fact: Almost everyone waiting in line wants good advice:
What kinds of multi-day Vaporetto tickets are available, and how much do they cost?
Where are these tickets valid?

You can avoid all of that by purchasing your tickets in advance and in German.

  • Consulting Services in German (via the Internet, phone, or email)
  • Get information and make reservations from the comfort of your own home
  • Take your time to choose what's best for you
  • Same price as at the venue (NO booking fees)
  • In Venice, skip the line and print your ticket right away.
