If you’re staying in a vacation rental in Venice or simply want to avoid the high prices for drinks and snacks in the tourist areas, you’ll need a supermarket. But in the historic Old Town, you won’t find the usual large parking lots or eye-catching advertising signs. Supermarkets in Venice are usually discreetly tucked away in old palaces or even former movie theaters.
The Most Famous Chains in the Old Town In Venice, three chains in particular dominate the cityscape:
- Despar / Eurospar: They are often housed in very beautiful buildings.
- Conad: Known for its good selection of fresh, local products.
- Coop: One of the most widespread chains with many smaller locations (Coop Adriatica).
The CRAI right on St. Mark's Square

In the middle of the old (northern) Procuratie on St. Mark's Square, walk through the arcades marked with the sign: „Piazza San Marco"„. Walk about 30 meters further. And you’ll find yourself right in front of the supermarket shown here.

A special highlight: Despar Teatro Italia In the neighborhood Cannaregio (near the train station) you'll find what is arguably one of the most beautiful supermarkets in the world. It's located in a former theater. While you're shopping for bread or cheese, you can admire the magnificent ceiling frescoes and the old theater stage. It's worth a visit just for the architecture alone.

Things to Keep in Mind When Shopping:
- Hours: Most supermarkets are open daily from about 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 or 9:00 p.m., including Sundays.
- Plastic Bag Mandate: In Italy, plastic bags are subject to a fee and are usually made of biodegradable material. It's best to bring your own cloth bag.
- Fruits and vegetables: In almost all markets, you have to weigh your own fruits and vegetables. Important: Be sure to use the disposable gloves provided, before you touch the merchandise—this is strictly enforced in Italy.

My advice to you: Stop by the supermarkets to stock up on water and small snacks for the day. A 0.5-liter bottle of water often costs less than €1.00 at the supermarket, whereas you’ll easily pay €3.00 at the kiosks on St. Mark’s Square.
The Major Supermarkets on the Map

My personal tip: If you're staying in the center of Venice, you should plan a little detour off the beaten tourist path for your daily shopping. My personal favorite for you is the Despar Supermarket.
Ample space: While most Venetian supermarkets in the narrow alleys are often very cramped and crowded, this market offers an exceptional sense of spaciousness. The relaxed shopping experience without the jostling is a major advantage, especially for seniors.
An impressive selection: Because of the store's size, you'll find a selection here that goes far beyond the basic offerings of the typical small neighborhood stores.
